The Global Infectious Diseases Institute (GIDI) gave this award to highlight excellence in undergraduate research from the University of Virginia, on infectious diseases of worldwide significance. Nnenna's work on the De novo genome assembly of the Plasmodium falciparum parasite to aid efforts towards understanding antimalarial drug resistance was one of the five highlighted research projects.
